The fixtures were supplied by lighting rental company Light Design from Copenhagen, which was the first in the country to invest in these powerful and impressive luminaires, purchased especially for this and one other project. They were part of the floor package for the tour.

Malte has been a lighting professional for 18 years and worked with Langer for the last three. This year’s summer tour was a great opportunity to present a totally new and fresh design to reflect the style and mood of the ‘greatest hits’ show, which also featured special guests.

“I needed a flexible design that looked spectacular, big, bold and vibrant when needed and yet could also help close the stage down for more intimate moments, and it had to fit a scalable lighting scheme so we could play the different-sized stages and maintain the integrity of the design,” he explained.

The aesthetic starting point was Langer and the four musicians who would be onstage with him, and Malte was also very conscious of keeping the focus on them and the music.

It was also Malte’s first time using Robe’s WTF! and the 15 fixtures were rigged on wheeled trussing dollies for quick deployment onstage and for easy packing and transportation. This configuration enabled them to fit neatly into the back of the truck.

When looking for the right product, Malte wanted something super-punchy as many of the shows played at least some part in daylight or dusk, thanks to Denmark’s very long summer days.

Even after a lot of deliberation and comparisons before picking the WTF!s as his ideal fixture, Malte was surprised at their effectiveness. “They absolutely exceeded expectations!” he declared.

The standard WTF! positioning was just in front of the cloth backdrop, where they were also used to up-light – seven WTF!s covered the cloth extremely well. Additionally, he programmed them to produce a wide variety of fly-out and fan-out effects.

“Even in the darkest colours, they blasted through,” he noted, adding that they worked exceptionally well in these deck positions.

Malte also lights theatre shows and is known as a purist for using lights with good optical features. He was even pleasantly surprised at the WTF!’s dimmer curve, commenting that this is unusual to find in this class of light and this is something he much appreciates.

Robe has “clearly taken time and given this plenty of thought,” he observed.

Ahead of the tour, he spent time in the studio with the fixture, fine-tuning and discovering how to optimise the CTO curve and other features like the 360-degree pan-and-tilt movement, which was also used during Mads’ set.

He also likes the individual zone zoom of the top part of the fixture – the bottom section he tended to use for the base colour with zoom and beam from the top. “You get a lot of fixture for your money!”
